Information technology and libraries: Project on digitization of archives of the National Library of Norway is going on
The integrated approach in digitization of the holdings of the National Library of Norway began 6 years ago. Today, it is scanned and processed 100 000 books, being out of print till 2000.
According to the existing schedule of works, a quarter of a million books will be digitized. According to Hadya Tadjik, recently became the head of the Ministry of Culture of Norway, “now all Norwegians have access to unique digital library and archive right at home or office”. The clarification “all Norwegians” is on principle – free access to the resource is possible only with computers, which have a Norwegian IP-address (Norwegian “registration).
The web site bokhylla.no, through which 100 000 books are freely available, began to exist in 2009 and its mission is to provide the residents of the country free access “to the cultural heritage in the Internet”.
Librarians of the country are proud of the project, the implementation of which became possible by the state support and agreement between the national company to which copyrights were delegated and the National Library.
