Memory of Russia: Canvas of Peter von Hess “Crossing the Berezina” is presented in the Hermitage

As part of the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812 the State Hermitage continues to present battle piece paintings, made by P. von Hesse by Nicholas II in honor of the most important events of the Patriotic war of 1812. The Winter Palace in the Military Gallery is exhibited the canvas “Crossing the Berezina”.

It tells on drama, played out on the river Berezina in November 1812. During the battle the French Army lost 25 000 soldiers. Von Hesse was managed to accurately convey all the darkness and the epic of those events.
