
World culture: Unknown painting of Murillo to be presented at the exhibition in London
Dulwich Picture Gallery (London) announced that it had found out in its collection an unknown painting of Bartolome Esteban Murillo.
Previously it was thought that the painting “The Adoration of the Magi” belonged to a student of Maurillo. Because of this, in 1970s it was nearly sold for thousands pounds, but it was decided to put it in the store. During the restoration of the painting where were removed several layers of varnish and specialists attributed the open image to the Spanish master of the XVIII.
“The Adoration of the Magi” will be presented at the exhibition “Murillo and Justino de Neve: Art of Friendship” which will be held in Dulwich from February 6 to May 19, 2013. The exhibition created with the participation of Madrid Prado is dedicated to the relationship of the artist and his patron.
“The Adoration of the Magi” is not the only happy discovery which will be presented at the exhibition, says The Guardian. So, in 2012 in the private collection there was found the work of Maurillo “Repentant Saint Peter”, which had been considered lost for 50 years and it was known only from black-and-white photograph.
