International events: Exhibition “The discovery of Holland” as part of the events of Year of Russia – Holland in Ivanovo

12 April 2013

April 11, 2013 in the Museum of Industry and Art of Ivanovo opened the exhibition “The discovery of Holland” as part of events dedicated to the Year of Russian in the Netherlands and the Netherlands in Russia.

For the first time visitors will admire the rare exhibits of universal encyclopedic collection of D. G. Burylin relating to the history and culture of the Netherlands of the XVI-XVIII centuries. The earliest of them is the lifetime medal of the Flemish painter Quentin Massey of 1519 with a portrait of the scientist Gerhard Gerhardt, known under the name of Erasmus of Rotterdam.

The XVII century is the “golden age” of Dutch culture and, in particular, the work of publishing houses of engravers and cartographers Visscher (Piscator) and Elsevier. Visitors will be able to see the Bible («Theatrum biblicum») of Nicholas Ioannis Visscher (Piscator) of 1650 – the Amsterdam fully engraving edition of 500 prints from drawings by Flemish and Dutch masters. Russia has 30 known surviving copies of the Bible Piscator, 2 of which are stored in the collections of rare books of the D. G. Burylin Ivanovo State History Museum. The “Etymological Latin Dictionary” with Elsevier publishing label “wise man under the tree” is represented in the exhibition, along with other rare books of the XVII - XVIII centuries.

The development of political, trade, scientific and cultural relations between Russia and the Netherlands can be traced in the numismatic, documentary and object sources – exhibits of the exhibition: medals, coins, cards, lithographs and typical everyday things of the end of the XVII - XVIII centuries.

Separate thematic complexes are devoted to the nature and attractions of the Netherlands, the museums’ collections of Amsterdam and Groningen, the program “The Hague International Model of the United Nations” in Russia and Ivanovo.
