Russian Anniversaries: Russia Celebrates Radio Day

On the 7th of May Russia celebrates the Radio Day - a professional holiday of workers of communication industry.

This day went down to history of world science and technology as the birthday of radio. On the 7th of May 1895, in St. Petersburg an outstanding Russian scientist Alexander Stepanovich Popov (1859-1906) presented at the Physical Section of the Russian  Physical and Chemical Society a public lecture “On the Relation of Metallic Powders to Electrical Oscillations” and demonstrated the world's first radio receiver accomplishing radio communication session for the first time. "I hope that my device with a further improvement could be applied to the distant transmission of signals by means of fast electrical oscillations", - summed up his presentation Popov.

For the first time this date was celebrated in the Soviet Union in 1925. On May 7, 1945, the 50th anniversary of the invention of radio was widely commemorated in Soviet Union. Since, the government has decided to consider this date the annual Radio Day.

The exhibitions dedicated to the Radio Day are being held in various institutions of culture. Thus, in the Belgorod State Universal Scientific Library hosts an exhibition of literature introducing to the readers the discoveries of universal importance that have influenced the invention of radio, and a future development of radio and broadcasting.

The Scientific and Technical Library of the Technological Institute of Southern Federal University in Taganrog invites to dedicated to Radio Day exposition "Radio: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” presenting the books about a history of radio discovery, radio engineering development up to the present day, and its perspectives.
