Information technology and society: By 2020 almost all the population of the Earth to have access to the Internet
Only about a third of the world’s population today has the ability to access the Internet, but by 2020, to access the internet will be able practically the entire population of the planet - mostly through mobile devices, said vice president of emerging markets of Google Mohammad Gavdat during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
According to Gavdat the market of devices with access to the Internet is radically changing under the influence of several forces - new types of users, formats of content consumption and costs of products and services. The examples are the use of mobile devices as a “second screen” while watching TV and getting a straight answer to a search query entered by a voice from a smart phone or tablet.
At the same time, according to the representative of Google, the consumption patterns of online content are different in different countries. For example, in some developing countries where people originally accessed the Internet from their mobile devices, smart phones and tablets are the main platforms for video viewing, and in Europe, where there is a well-developed infrastructure of broadband Internet users often access the net with desktops.
