18 March 2014

In Toledo, at the Museum of Santa Cruz (Spain) on March 14, 2014 was opened an exhibition dedicated to the Spanish artist El Greco - "The Greek from Toledo". The exhibition is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the death of the master, and promises to be the largest of all that has ever been organized: it features about a hundred paintings from museums and private collections in the world.

The exhibition includes early works by the painter – of "pre-Hispanic" period when he lived in Venice and Rome, he wrote under the influence of Titian, Tintoretto, Michelangelo and other Italian masters. The organizers of the exhibition emphasize viewers on works created by the artist as a portrait painter. This is a genre that glorified El Greco. He received recognition of contemporaries, even despite the obvious contrasts between the background on his paintings and typical species of Spain at the time. The exhibition also tells of the artist drawn to copying of his works. That's why masterpieces by El Greco are available at many museums around the world.
