Libraries and society: The development of the National Electronic Library discussed the All-Russian Library Congress in Ryazan

In Ryazan as part of the ongoing All-Russian Library Congress, which is attended by more than 500 representatives of the branch from 97 Regions of the country, took place the discussion of the development of the largest project of the Ministry of Culture of Russia – the National Electronic Library.  This was told by Secretary of State – deputy Minister of Culture of Russia Gregory Ivliev at the opening of the Congress.

“The development of libraries is one of the most important objectives of the Year of Culture. The library has a great future, and we will develop them as an information resource, as a resource of knowledge, and as a resource of culture. The National Electronic Library project aims to identify new place and the role of libraries in the information society, making them an important link access to scientific and educational information, the enlightenment and spiritual development”.

The deputy minister noted that the creation of a single portal, distributed fund and a single library ticket will provide access for citizens of the Russian Federation to a common fund of electronic publications and multimedia content for scientific, educational and cultural themes through the Internet. In 2013, it has been done a huge preparatory work. The result should be a single national collection of full text electronic documents, free access is done both within the library reading rooms - participating in the project through the virtual reading rooms and through the NEL website. In December 2014 is expected the launch of the portal of the NEL.
