World history: Events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the landing of the allied troops start in Normandy

In Normandy (France) start the celebrations dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the landing of the allied troops on June 6, 2944. The operation “Overload” has become the largest battle of the World War II in this part of Europe, marking the opening of the Western Front.

On the eve of the solemn events President of Russia Vladimir Putin arrived in France. 

Normandy welcomes leaders of 18 states, as well as about a thousand of veterans of the World War II. The program of activities will begin with the wreath-laying ceremony by the French President Francois Hollande the memorial of Caen. For the first time it will host the ceremony in memory of not only soldiers, died during the operation, but also victims among the world population of France.

Official reception for heads of states and veterans will be given in the castle Benouville. Thereafter, the delegation will go to the coast - in the town of Ouistreham, where there was one of the five main points of operation "Overlord". In this sector the landing was made by British military men, soldiers of "Fighting France" made their contribution as well.

The operation "Overlord" was the largest landing operation in history. In this case the historian Jean-Pierre Azema, which was attracted by the Elysee Palace to the organization of commemorative events, recalls that one should not forget that the success of the Allies on the Western Front was only possible thanks to the efforts of Soviet troops on the Eastern Front. In the summer of 1944 most of the German troops was shackled fighting in the east, where the Wehrmacht as a result of the operation "Bagration" suffered heavy losses.
