History and culture: The Museum of the First World War to be created on the basis of the old fort in Kaliningrad

The Polish company Eko-inbud has presented a project of the reconstruction of the fort № 11 “Doenhoff” in the Kaliningrad region and the creation on its base of a thematic museum of the First World War with a landscape park.

“It is supposed that recovery facility will be implemented by the company “Eko-inbud”, and the content side of the project – the museum “Gerhard Fort”. Fort №11 is of much interest for us. The facilities with so many details are nowhere else in Europe. It is very important the moat preserved here, as well as green spaces, architectural details and the ownership issue is solved”, - said the expert from Poland Dariusz Kshivda. The concept, presented by developers, suggests that fort №11 will be used for entertainment and the rest of the residents of the city, as well as the preservation of the historical memory: restaurants and museums can be located in fortification.

Fort № 11 “Doenhoff” was built in 1877-1882, is covered the railroad to Insterburg. It is an elongated hexagon on the front, surrounded by a water ditch. The interiors and two courtyards are located symmetrically relative to the central underground corridor. In 2007 the fort granted a status of the object of cultural heritage of the regional significance.
