
World culture: The exhibition “Gold of the Sarmatians” in Moscow
From 5 September to 30 November 2014 in the Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Arts (Moscow), is held an exhibition "Gold of the Sarmatians". It presents the best items of the Sauromates-Sarmatian culture (IV century BC - IV century AD) from the collection of the Astrakhan State Museum. The exhibition takes place in the framework of a large museum program "Property of Russia. Traditions for the Future" and embodies a rich slice culture of one of the regions of Russia. The exhibition "Gold of Sarmatians" is a gift of the Astrakhan Museum to Muscovites for the City Day.
The Sarmatians - nomadic pastoral Iranian-speaking tribes of the end of the Early Iron Age (VI-IV centuries BC), inhabiting the steppe regions of Zavolzhsky Ural up to the watershed of the Tisza and Danube rivers. The exhibition features precious metals from V century BC to I century AD. The presented collection on the example of decorative art displays Scythian-Sarmatian life, so-called "Scythian triad": nomadic pastoralism, military life and the Scythian-Siberian "animal style".
The collection of archaeological objects made of precious metals of the Astrakhan Museum-Reserve began taking shape in the second half of the XX century as a result of active excavation of ancient burial mounds, which are rich burials of the Sarmatian time. The museum-reserve stores found in the Astrakhan region the rarest objects of archeology of gold and silver treasures. The earliest finds were created more than 5 thousand years ago.
These masterpieces can now reflect echoes of the unique culture, historical heritage of that keeps the spirit of past millennia.
