History of the Russian navigation: The exposition on the history of navigation of the Angarski Krai onboard the icebreaker “Angara”

On the icebreaker “Angara” (Irkutsk) is placed the tablet exhibition about the history of the navigation of the Angarski Krai “On the waves of the glorious lake Baikal”. The exhibition is prepared on the basis of materials of the Irkutsk Regional History Museum and exhibits, provided by the Irkutsk Regional department of the National Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture.

Fifteen tablets tell of the history of navigation in the Irkutsk region, present photo copies of ship equipment, items, belonging to ship owners and the crew, geographical maps. The key theme of the exposition is the history of the icebreaker “Angara”.

The icebreaker “Angara” is one of the fist icebreakers in the world and the oldest of surviving ships of the type. It is made on the stocks shipyards “Sir V. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and K°” (England), launched on July 25, 1900. From 1975 to 1987, the ship was in waterlogged condition. Since 1990, after the lifting and restoration icebreaker “Angara” is used as a floating museum of history, science and technology.
