Memorable dates of Russia: The exhibition “Serov. Not a portraitist. To the 150th birth anniversary” in Saint-Petersburg

March 5, 2015 in the Benois Building of the State Russian Museum (Saint-Petersburg) is opening the exhibition “Serov. Not a portraitist. To the 150th birth anniversary”.

In the State Russian Museum collection is presented a brilliant collection of portraits of Valentin Serov (1865-1911), many of which have become true classics of Russian art of the late XIX-XX centuries. However, the artist himself stressed that he is not only a portraitist. At the exhibition timed to the 150th birth anniversary of Valentin Serov, this master is presented as a historical painter, genre painter, landscape painter, author of works, largely anticipated the opening of Russian avant-garde.

The exhibition features approximately 250 paintings, drawings, sculptures from the collection of the State Russian Museum, as well as from the collections of other museums in Russia. Viewers will be able to see for the first time the painting "Christ Walking on Water" (1890), made by Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin for the parish church of the Kostroma factory P. M. Tretyakov and V. D. Konshin.
