Museums: The exhibition “Vasily Vereshchagin. 1824-1904” opened in Yaroslavl

16 July 2015

July 15 at the Yaroslavl Art Museum was opened an exhibition devoted to the work of one of the famous Russian artists - Vasily Vasilievich Vereshchagin.

Small in number of submitted works, the exhibition gives a complete overview of all genres, themes and directions of the artist. The viewer will see paintings and sketches by Vereshchagin on the results of numerous visits to Turkestan, India, the theater of war of the Russian-Turkish and the Spanish-American wars in Vologda, Crimea.

Almost all the life of Vereshchagin went on trips: Turkestan, India, the Balkans, Palestine, Crimea, the Caucasus, the Russian North, the United States, Japan. In his bold and risky journey the artist was a tireless researcher of the culture and customs of different nations. In numerous studies, he recorded everything of great interest. At the same time small pieces of canvas or wood were not runaway journey sketches - they are of finished character, in fact, it is the picture of only smaller. Few better than he could cope with the problem of ethnographic sketches and studies, performed with amazing skill. "He is very carefully watching everything that gets in his eyes, and hence derives its pronounced realism. But artistic nature of Vereshchagin does not allow him waling over the border of realism and fall on the one hand, in the rough naturalism, on the other hand - in the photographic protocol. Nowhere we see his soulless copy nature, even in the most minor sketches", - wrote G. Dirks (Berlin, 1886.BerlinerTageblatt).

Vereshchagin was not only an artist but also a professional military officer. He called himself a painter of military scenes, battle scenes instead. In his works, he talked about the war as the immense human drama.

The exhibition will run until October 25.
