History and culture: Unique exhibits are presented at the exhibition “Decorations from colorful trees” in Peterhof
August 6, 2015 in the halls of the Museum of the Benois family is opened the exhibition "Ornaments of colorful trees… Russian type-setting furniture of the era of Catherine II", representing 35 subjects of inlaid furniture and more than 30 works of graphic art from the collections of the State Museum "Peterhof", the State Hermitage Museum and the private collection of family the Karisalov. Most of the exhibits by the remarkable craftsmanship was previously unknown to the general public.
The temporary exhibition, devoted to the topic, is organized for the first time in many years. In 1973, the State Hermitage Museum held the exhibition "Russian type-setting furniture of the XVIII century". However, the catalog of the exhibition has not been issued, and the information on it has been preserved only in a small booklet. The new temporary exhibition - the result of years of work on the study of Russian furniture, decorated in the technique of marquetry.
The exhibition gives an idea of the various methods of decorating objects in the technique of marquetry, tools used, as well as those illustrated editions of the XVIII century, which served as a visual aid for masters work. The exhibition was first included watercolors from the collections of the State Hermitage and photographs from the archives of the Museum "Peterhof": they now captured the lost items of Russian "mosaic" that once adorned the rooms of the Imperial Palace.
