Monuments of book culture: Exhibition “The chain of traditions” featuring the collection of books of the Schneerson family in Moscow
From October 22 to December 22, 2015 the Moscow Jewish Museum and the Tolerance Center are holding the exhibition "The chain of tradition" covering Jewish historiography in the collection of books of the Schneerson family.
Historical writings are part of the Jewish literature from as far back as biblical times. In post-biblical period there appeared several genres of historical writings, which based more or less on the scriptures. The exhibition presents eight editions of historical books of the 18th – 19th centuries, some of which include stamps of the members of Schneerson family, such as Sholom Dov Ber (1860-1920) and Yosef Yitzchak (1880-1950). Visitors can see the illustrations for a rare edition of 1743, a part of the Schneerson book collection. It was the first Amsterdam publication of the Yiddish translation of the "Iosippon" - a medieval version of "The Jewish War" by the famous historian Josephus.
