Memory of Russia: The first stone at the site of the monument to St. Vladimir to be laid

November 4, 2015 in Moscow at the Borovitsky hill will be laid the first stone at the site of the monument to St. Vladimir. The event will be attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, Chairman of the Russian military-historical society, the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

The monument was created on people's donations by sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov. The site of the monument - Borovitskaya square - residents of the capital chose the site as a result of the online survey, which was held by the Russian military-historical society, as well as according to the results of voting at the portal of the "Active Citizen". 

Natural stone was brought from Chersonese (Crimea). According to historical evidence, the baptism of Prince Vladimir took place in 988 in the town of Hersonissos, or Korsun, as it was called earlier in Russia. After the baptism Grand Duke was named Basil.

In the year of the millennium anniversary of the passing away of the Holy Apostolic Grand Prince Vladimir - Baptist of Rus’, monuments to him are installed in Rostov Veliky, Saraktash (the Orenburg region), Bataisk (the Rostov region), Kemerovo, Volokolamsk, Smolensk, Vladimir and Kaliningrad. Opening of the monument in Moscow will be the culmination of events dedicated to the memory of the Grand Prince.
