History and culture: The exhibition “Sacred texts through the eyes of contemporary artists” in Saint-Petersburg

The Peter and Paul Fortress (Tsar Bastion) until January 31, 2015 hosts an exhibition "The scriptures through the eyes of contemporary artists".

The exhibition brings together more than one hundred original illustrations by contemporary Russian artists to the biblical texts. This visual interpretation of the books of the series "Sacred Texts", dedicated to the religions of the world. To date, the series it is published six books, continuing work on future projects. The exhibition includes illustrations, as already released to the public, and to preparing volumes.

In addition to original illustrations on display there are books in which they are played, as well as unique new edition of "The Revelation of St. John the Divine (Apocalypse)" with illustrations of the manuscript old believe books found in a remote Zaonezhie village in 1940 and currently located in storage of the Pushkin House. Figures in this wonderful monument of peasant Old Believers' culture of the XIX century, the Karelian called Apocalypse belong to the unknown artist who was drawing miniatures known sample and did not use the Draw. In terms of visual canon of his work naive, wrong, but extremely expressive and expressive, are unexpected in composition and color.
