
Society and culture: The exhibition “Geography. Anthropomorphic Maps” in Saint-Petersburg
Unusual interpretation of the maps is available at the exhibition of Leonid Vasilevsky "Geography. Anthropomorphic Maps", which opened at the St. Petersburg headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society.
The "anthropomorphic geographical atlas" of Vasilevsky includes 25 paintings, 11 of which are represented at the exhibition. Leonid Vasilevsky saw in the bends of the geographical map human images. Baltic Sea imagined to him in the form of Rurik, sailing boat, India - in the form of an elephant, Europe - in the form of a woman, and the East in the form of a warrior, whose Turkey - head, Syria - armor, Iraq - heart, Saudi Arabia - painted Quran in hands.
The exhibition in the RGS - the first Russian art exhibition, featuring exclusive maps in an anthropomorphic form. All 11 works - a classic easel painting: they are painted in oil on canvas with dimensions of 60 centimeters to one and a half meters.
