3 October 2016

Historical-documentary exhibition "The Church of Christ in the North Caucasus", reflecting the major milestones in the development of the Russian Orthodox Church since the beginning of the XVII century to the present day, was opened in Stavropol. The basis of the exhibition are rare documents, photographs, plans, drawings from the collections of the State Archive of the Russian Federation and other federal and local archives, the Stavropol State Historical-Cultural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, as well as church and private archives and collections.

Documents of the State Archive of the Russian Federation recreate the policy of the state and position of the Russian Orthodox Church in the North Caucasus in the early years of Soviet power. They are represented by contacting members of the Southeast Local Church Council held in Stavropol in 1919, telegrams, letters about the seizure of church property and the removal of the bells.

There are exhibited about 300 archival documents, rare exhibits and publications, including the funds of the Museum of Church History and Art of the Diocese of Stavropol and Nevinnomyssk, as well as photographs that characterize modern life of the diocese. For the first time on display there are some of the documents of XVII - XVIII centuries from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts, for example, Boris Godunov petition, dated 1603, documents the construction of temples in the Azov-Mozdok fortified line and the baptism of everyone to accept Christianity.

The exhibition is the regional project. At the same time it opens in all municipal areas and urban districts with the participation of representatives of the dioceses that make up the Archdiocese of Stavropol.

The exhibition will run until November 10, 2016.
