The peoples of Russia: Exhibition of sacred attributes of the Khanty and the Mansi "Rider - Golden Light" in Novosibirsk

The Novosibirsk State Regional Museum on December 23, 2016 opened an exhibition of sacred attributes of the Khanty and the Mansi "Rider - Golden Light" from the collections of the Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of Siberia and Far East Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAE SB RAS).

The exhibition presents the sacred attributes of the peoples of the Khanty and Mansi: sacrificial covers, quivers, ceremonial hats, belts, perfumes figures and other religious objects dating from the XIX - XX centuries.

Among the most interesting exhibits - Tatar saber of XVIII century with gold inlay in the form of a national ornament - ritual instrument of divination of Khanty shaman, the figure of saint patrons, based on that used anthropomorphic images, frog image, etc. Also on display you can see the unique helmet of Mansi of 1920-1930 with ornamental heavenly horseman (hero Mir-susne-huma) in the guise of Red Guard: in budenovka holster and revolver on its side.

The exhibition "Rider - Golden Light" is the outcome of years of work of the circumpolar expedition of the ethnographic unit of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the SB RAS in the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District and is dedicated to the memory of J. H. Gemuev, the founder of the collection of the spiritual culture of the Khanty and Mansi Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East.
