Memorable dates of Russia: Exhibition "The giant of Russian literature" the 250th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Karamzin in Moscow

The Blue exhibition hall of the Russian State Library (Moscow) opened the exhibition "Giant of Russian Literature", prepared by the Library to the 250th anniversary of the birth of writer, poet and historian Nikolai Karamzin (1766-1826). The exhibition presents printed and manuscript heritage of Karamzin. The basis of the exhibition is lifetime editions of his works from the collection of the research department of rare books (Book Museum). It is used both materials of storage of fixed assets departments, manuscripts, graphic and cartographic publications.

Creativity of Karamzin largely determined the course of development of Russian literature abroad in the XVIII-XIX centuries. Exhibition materials reveal a rich range of his creative activity. Here you can see the first edition of his prose, poetry, historical works, including "Letters of a Russian Traveler", "Poor Liza", "History of the Russian State", correspondence with writers, historians, politicians, personal letters.

The success of Karamzin quickly stepped outside Russia, so the place of honor at the exhibition occupy lifetime translations of his works into European languages, including publication in German, French, English, Dutch, Italian and Polish. Evidence of the popularity of the writer - numerous anthologies, anthologies, textbooks, songbooks containing reprints of his works, as well as manuscript collections, which include works by Karamzin. They show the special role of Karamzin as the innovator of the writer, is actively involved in the formation of literature intended for a wide reader demand. The exhibition immerses visitors in the artistic atmosphere of the cultural life of Russia of the first decades of the XIX century. Exposure decoration - exhibits originating from the memorial "Karamzin room" in Ostafyevo, now stored in the Department of Manuscripts of the RSL. It presents portraits of his contemporaries, the types of plans and the places where he lived and worked Karamzin.
