Memorable dates of Russia: Exhibition "The philosopher, philologist and collector of autographs. To the 125th anniversary of Pavel Nikolayevich Medvedev" in St. Petersburg

January 19, 2017 in the Department of Manuscripts of the National Library of Russia (St. Petersburg) was opened the exhibition "Philosopher, scholar, collector of autographs. To the 125th anniversary of the birth of Pavel Nikolaevich Medvedev (1892-1938)". 

For the first time the exhibition will feature unique archival documents and literary criticism, popular lecturer, professor of the Leningrad University Pavel Nikolaevich Medvedev.

Pavel Nikolayevich has been an active participant in the unique event of national culture, one of which - the phenomenon of Vitebsk "Cultural Renaissance" of the 1910s - 1920s - creation of a professional art school, where agreed ways of the greatest masters of the XX century - Chagall, Dobuzhinsky, Lissitzky, Malevich, Falk. 

Medvedev was familiar with many prominent figures of Russian and Soviet culture in the first third of the XX century, he collected and carefully preserved manuscripts of Leonid Andreev, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok, Osip Mandelstam, Boris Pasternak, Ivan Bunin, Maximilian Voloshin, Olga Forsch, Vyacheslav Shishkov, other well-known writers and poets. Among the exhibits there are rare documents - manuscripts of poetry, prose, letters of great writers. The exhibition is complemented by portraits of Medvedev’s archive.  

The exposition of the Manuscript Division for the first time ipresents a unique material on the history of literature in 1910 - 1930s of the XX century. Contemporaries believed that it was impossible to overestimate the cultural mission of Medvedev, due to which the legacy of poets of the Silver Age has not been erased from the life and literature of those years.

The exhibition will be open until February 15.
