Peoples of the World: The opening of the new exposition "Latin America" took place in the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in Saint-Petersburg

June 5, 2017 took place the solemn opening of a unique permanent exhibition of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) RAS "Latin America".

The exposition will complement the regional ethnographic exposition existing in the museum in North America, Eurasia and Africa. The uniqueness of the exposition for the museum and cultural landscape of Russia lies in the fact that it is the only one in Russia representing a complex of ancient and modern cultures of Latin America both in the context of world culture and in connection with the development of scientific humanitarian knowledge and cultural contacts of Latin America and Russia. 

In total, in the collection of the Kunstkamera contains more than 8,500 items brought from almost all Latin American countries. The four hundred most valuable of them will now be available for viewing. Among the exhibits there are samples of ritual clothing made of bast cloth made by the Indians of the northwestern Amazon in the XVIII-XIX centuries; headgear and feather ornaments, brought in the first half of the XIX century. From central Brazil by the expedition of Academician G. I. Langsdorf; Suits of Indian shamans from western Mexico, Guiana and Paraguay; Rare examples of the art of the Cadweeo Indians living on the border of Brazil and Paraguay, as well as the sculpture of the ancient Aztecs, hunting weapons and utensils of the Fuegians, the head trophies of the Indians Munduruku and Shuar, ceramics from Ancient Peru. Together with the famous museum mannequins, these collections create a spectacular and expressive image of Latin America, rich in vivid cultural traditions.
