Before the six-meter bronze sculpture "Motherland" was lit the Eternal Flame from the torch on the Champ de Mars. The authors of the memorial ensemble are architects A. Vasiliev, E. A. Levinson, sculptors V. V. Isaeva and R. K. Taurit, and others. Piskarevskoe cemetery was founded in 1939 on the northern outskirts of Leningrad (since 1991 - St. Petersburg) and was named after the nearby village of Piskarevka. In 1941-1944 it became a place of mass graves. Victims of the siege of Leningrad and the soldiers of the Leningrad Front are buried in mass graves. For outstanding service to the Motherland, the courage and heroism shown by the inhabitants of Leningrad in the fight against the German invaders in the difficult conditions of a prolonged military blockade, and in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, Leningrad was awarded the title "Hero City" on May 8 1965 with the awarding of the medal "Golden Star"
