At the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, in the affairs of August 5 and 6, Bystrom excellently defended the crossing of the Dnieper, and in the battle of Borodino he was the first to encounter the onslaught of excellent enemy forces. In the same year he participated in the battles at Tarutin, near Maloyaroslavets, in the night attack at the village. Clementino and especially distinguished himself at the village. Good, near Red, where at the head of the huntsman brigade defeated the enemy troops standing against him, took many prisoners, 9 guns, 2 banners and the marshal's baton Davout.
