Tyumen Region was established

14 August 1944

Tyumen Region was established on August 14, 1944 by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR as a result of downsizing Omsk Region, and adding districts of Kurgan Region. The newly established region also included Yamal-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Areas, which were national at that time (autonomous areas since 1977).

According to the Treaty of Federation of 1992, confirmed by the Constitution of the Russian Federation of 1993, the region received the status of the constituent entity. Khanty-Mansi and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Areas became independent entities of the Russian Federation, while remaining part of Tyumen Region in terms of the administrative-territorial division. In 1995, the Charter of Tyumen Region was adopted, and its flag and coat of arms were approved.

Since 2000 Tyumen Region has been part of the Ural Federal District. It is located in the west of the Asian part of Russia and covers the area of 1435,2 thousand sq. km. It borders on Kazakhstan, Komi Republic, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Sverdlovsk, Kurgan, Omsk, Tomsk and Arkhangelsk Regions. The population of the region as of 2019 exceeds 3,7 million people.

In the early 2016 Tyumen Region included two equal constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Khanty-Mansi - Yugra and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Areas, 29 cities (6 of them had a population of over 100,000 people, including Tyumen with a population of 720,600 people), 38 districts, 28 urban-type settlements, 1,479 rural settlements.

The region is globally renowned for hydrocarbon resources and is the largest reserve of oil and gas of Russia. The unique oil fields include Samotlor, Priobskoye, Fyodorovskoye, Mamontovskoye and others. Gas and gas-condensate fields are: Urengoy, Medvezhye, Yamburg, Zapolyarnoye, Bovanenkovo etc. According to experts, rich hydrocarbon zones are located on the Gydan Peninsula and on Yamal shelf in the Kara Sea. The Uvat group of fields in the south of the region is being actively developed. There is a production of peat, sapropel, quartz sand, clay, limestone, building stone and other mineral resources in the region.

Tyumen Region is one of the largest regions of Russia, which is unique in terms of the diversity of national and religious composition. More than 150 nations and ethnic groups live in the region. Well-developed national education system has been established. There are ethno-cultural centers and schools, where native languages are taught. National festivals, days of national culture of peoples of Tyumen Region, national holidays are held in the region.

Unique monuments of archaeology, town building, architecture, art and engineering testify to the cultural flourishing of different epochs and civilizations in Tyumen. Today there are more than 1,800 historical and cultural heritage sites in Tyumen Region: monuments of architecture, history, monumental art, and archaeological antiquities, including 80 federal monuments.

The main wealth of the region, its well-deserved pride and glory, are people. Their names are well-known far beyond the region and Russia. These are prominent politicians, scientists, business executives, cultural and art figures, and athletes: Dmitry Mendeleev, Alexander Alyabyev, Gavriil Batenkov, Yuri Gulyayev, Pyotr Yershov, Mikhail Znamensky, Vladislav Krapivin, Raul Ervier, Viktor Muravlenko and many others.

Today economically stable Tyumen Region continues to develop rapidly and is confident about the future.

On May 23, 2011 the branch of the Presidential Library was officially opened in Tyumen Region. It was then that the Tyumen Region Governor V. V. Yakushev and Director General of the Presidential Library A. P. Vershinin signed an agreement on cooperation.
