The event marked the 240th anniversary of the outstanding poet, translator, mentor Alexander II, author of the words of the State Anthem of the Russian Empire "God Save the Tsar!" Vasily Zhukovsky.

Order of Saint Anna established

The Order of Saint Anna, one of the highest awards in the Russian Empire, was established on February 14, 1735 by Karl Friedrich, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in honour of his wife Anna Petrovna, daughter of Emperor Peter I, who died in 1728. The order was brought to Russia in 1742 by their son, heir to the throne of the Duchy of Holstein, Charles Peter Ulrich, the future Russian Emperor Peter III.

Russian romantic poet, friend of Pushkin and Karamzin, mentor of the imperial family and author of the words of the anthem of the Russian Empire “God Save the Tsar!” Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky was born on February 9, 1783 in the village of Mishenskoye, Tula province. He was the illegitimate son of the landowner Afanasy Bunin and a captured Turkish woman, and received his patronymic and surname from his adoptive father, the impoverished nobleman Andrei Zhukovsky.

On March 17, 2021, the Underground Museum of the Zaryadye Park launched the "Crimea. History" exhibition. It was prepared by the ROSPHOTO Museum and Exhibition Centre. The exposition features unique photographs of the mid-XIX century with views of the cities, coastal villages, sea and mountains and Crimean residents. The history of the entrance of Crimea to the Russian Empire and its development is conveyed by maps, plans, engravings, decrees of Russian emperors and other documents.

March 30, 1867 the Russian Empire signed an agreement on the sale of Alaska to the United States of America. Emperor Alexander II decided to take such a step for both geopolitical and financial reasons. On December 20, 2018 the Saint Petersburg State Roerich Family Museum and Institute presented the exhibition “Monuments of the Past. Studies and Photographs by the Roerichs”. The exhibition is part of N. K. Roerich and Lithuania project. It tells about the journey undertaken by Nicholas and Helena Roerich to old cities of the Russian Empire in order to study ancient monuments.

Regions of Russia: Nizhny Novgorod to host the exhibition of rare prints and maps marking the 800th anniversary of the city

A new exhibition "Nizhny Novgorod in Engravings and Maps" will mark the 800th anniversary of the capital city on the Volga. It will feature maps of this region, beginning from the XVII century, foreign memoirs about Nizhny Novgorod, the first map of the Volga of 1659 and the first detailed map of the European part of the Russian Empire (12 square meters in size). All documents were provided by Vyacheslav Khurtin, who has been collecting them over a dozen years.
