Presidential Library launches a new academic year in Leningrad region

On Friday, August 24, 2018 the Presidential Library held the meeting of the pedagogical council “Leningrad region: from high-quality education to human capital”. The forum brought together 450 pedagogues, experts and officials, and more than 20 000 remote participants. The meeting was broadcasted on “Live broadcast” website of the Presidential Library and in social networks.

Soviet of People’s Commissars decree “On eradication of illiteracy of population in RSFSR”

December 26, 1919 the Council of People's Commissars (SNK) issued a decree "On the elimination of illiteracy among the population of the RSFSR". The decree provided for the complete eradication of illiteracy throughout the country: now the all the inhabitants of Soviet Russia at the age of 8 to 50 years, who did not know how to read or write, were obliged to learn to read and write in their native language or in Russian if desired.

Boris Mikhailovich Zhitkov was born on September 20 (October 3), 1872 in a noble family in the Mikhailovka Village of Ardatovsky Uezd of Simbirsk Governorate. Zhitkov’s grandfather participated in the Patriotic War of 1812, got injured in the Battle of Borodino, fought for the liberation of Europe, rose to the rank of Major General. His father was a military engineer, defended Sevastopol during the Crimean War, and was awarded state orders for bravery.
