Conference in the Presidential Library to focus on Dmitri Mendeleev’s fundamental heritage

On February 27, 2019 the Presidential Library will host a conference “Dmitri Mendeleev: Scientist. Metrologist. Educator”, dedicated to the 185th anniversary of the birth of the great scientist-polymath and the 150th anniversary of discovery of the Periodic Law of Chemical Elements. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast online on the portal of the Presidential Library in “Live Broadcasts” section.

The conference is an initiative of the Academy of Metrology of the Russian Federation and the All-Russian Mendeleev Research Metrology Institute. The signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the Academy of Metrology of the Russian Federation and the Presidential Library will take place as part of the event.

Apart from being a prominent chemist Dmitri Mendeleev was also the founder of Russian metrology and famous political economist. His system of standardization of measurements laid the foundation for metrological reform, which became an important state objective during the period of rapid development of capitalism and technical re-equipment of Russian industry at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries.

The guest speakers at the conference are: V. V. Okrepilov - President of the Academy of Metrology of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, V. N. Krutikov - Vice-President of the Academy of Metrology of the Russian Federation, A. P. Shevchik – Rector of the Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology, V. P. Shkodyrev – Director of the Higher School of Cyber Physical Systems and Control of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, A. N. Pronin – Head of the All-Russian Mendeleev Research Metrology Institute; I. S. Dmitriev – Director of the St. Petersburg State University Mendeleev Museum-Archive,  Ye. B. Ginak – Head of the  Rosstandart Metrology Museum. Their reports will focus on Dmitri Mendeleev’s many-sided personality, his fundamental contribution to the development of Russian education and science, in particular metrology and economics, as well as the relevance of the scientist’s heritage for modern Russia. A. S. Maksimov, Chairman of the Committee on Science and Higher Education of Administration of St. Petersburg, will open the conference.

 “Dmitri Mendeleev (1834–1907)” electronic collection is available on the portal of the Presidential Library. The collection includes the scientist’s works, his correspondence; visual materials, archival documents about his relatives, scientific, educational, and public activities; studies and many other materials.
