Chinese сity of Russian glory: the Presidential Library to spotlight the history of Port Arthur

On May 15, 2019, at 11:30 the Knowledge of Russia video lecture on the subject “Port Arthur and the Russian Presence in China” will take place in the Presidential Library. The event will be broadcasted live on the institution's portal in the “Live broadcasts” section, as well as in the official group of the Presidential Library in the VKontakte social network.

Port Arthur, now the area of ​​the Chinese city of Dalian, - is a warm-water port, which was of tremendous importance for Russia, both militarily and commercially. In 1898, it was rented for 25 years as part of a large-scale project of the famous statesman Sergei Witte. This set of measures was designed to create a rail link between the Far East and Europe and in many respects contributed to the economic domination of Russia in Central and Northern China.

Igor Lukoyanov, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Leading Researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute of History, RAS, will focus on the history of Port Arthur during the video lecture. The event will be also attended by teachers and students of the European University, the Pushkin Leningrad State University, St. Petersburg State University of Culture, Petrodvorets College, Peter the Great Polytechnic University, Christian Academy of Humanities, Institute of History, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, employees of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps. Teachers and students of secondary school № 2 of Zavodoukovsk of Tyumen Region will join the video lecture participants via video-conferencing mode.

One of the most important areas of work of the Presidential Library is the history of Russian statehood. The institution’s digital collections contains a large number of electronic copies of unique rare materials dedicated to Port Arthur. Of particular interest for readers and researchers are publications such as, for example, the diary of one of the direct participants in the defence of the city during the Russo-Japanese War, the company and battalion commander A. N. Golitsynsky “On the Positions of Port Arthur” (1907) or “Struggle for Port Arthur” (1907) of A. V. von Schwarz. They are available not only in the electronic reading room of the Presidential Library on Senate Square, 3 in St. Petersburg. Anyone has access to books from anywhere in the world using a computer or mobile device. An extensive interregional network of institution's remote access centers, which currently numbers about 1,000 in our country and abroad, provides access to the materials of the Presidential Library's collections.
