Presidential Library invites to meet with Krusenstern

27 July 2019

On Saturday, July 27, 2019, at 11:00 the Presidential Library welcomes "urban romantics" and all those interested in history, geography and travel to the Senate Square, 3 building. On the eve of the Navy Day of the Russian Federation and in the framework of the recently launched cycle of Saturday's meetings, the open public lecture “Compose dreams!”, organized jointly with the Central Naval Library, will take place in the library. It will be dedicated to the fate of Admiral Ivan Fedorovich Krusenstern, whose 250th anniversary will be celebrated next year.

The event will be attended by specialist of the Central Naval Library, the researcher of I. F. Krusenstern’s Library, Honored Cultural Worker of the Russian Federation Olga Fedorova and publisher, member of the Russian Geographical Society Alexei Krusenstern, the Krusenstern familys' ancestor.

The choice of a site for a story about outstanding Russian navigator is not accidental. The Presidential Library’s electronic collections include dozens of books, unique historical documents and atlases dedicated to the personality of Admiral I. F. Krusenstern and the First Russian round-the-world expedition initiated by him on the Nadezhda and Neva ships (1803–1806), the originals of which are stored in the Central Naval Library.

For example, few people know that this journey could not take place at all. He had to sacrifice for the sake of the expedition, and Krusenstern himself wrote in “Round-the-World Trip in 1803, 4, 5 and 1806 on Nadezhda and Neva ships”. The hardships experienced by other members of the expedition, are reflected in the book “Russian Round-the-World Trip. From Krusenstern to Sedov”.

The Presidential Library’s portal  features the album Round the World with Krusenstern with unique illustrations made by members of the expedition, the essay Admiral I. F. Krusenstern, the first Russian navigator around the world, the book Believe in Hope about the significance of the first Round-the-World Trips for modern Russia, photographs of monuments to Krusenstern in different cities of our country. These and other materials formed the basis of the large-scale collection “Russian Round-the-World Trips of the first half of the 19th century”, presented on the Presidential Library’s portal.
