What do we know about how we speak? The Presidential Library gives an answer

18 April 2023

On April 18, 2023 at 13:00 the Presidential Library will host a video lecture "Modern Oral Speech, or What We Know About How We Speak". 2023 has been declared the Year of the Russian language as the language of interethnic communication in the CIS space. In this regard, the Presidential Library hosts a series of lectures on topical issues of Russian studies and the problems of the development of the Russian language in the world.

What are the features of oral Russian speech? Do real oral speech and our understanding of it differ? Natalya Bogdanova-Beglaryan, Professor of the Russian Language Department of St. Petersburg State University, Doctor of Philology, will address the guests of the Presidential Library.

The talk will focus on the obvious gap that exists between spoken language and our understanding of how we speak. This representation is most often based on school education, as well as dictionaries and reference books that capture the features of the language, and often does not reflect the actual manifestation of oral speech. The lecture will use speech material that will help each participant hear himself first of all.

The event is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in the Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the pages on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

The final video lecture series from a series of lectures on topical issues of Russian studies and the problems of the development of the Russian language in the world will take place on April 24 at 16:30.
