Yuri Panteleimonovich Pribylsky, Tobolsk historian, ethnographer and writer was born on April 19, 1926, in Tobolsk. His father was an economist Panteleimon Khrisanfovich Pribylsky and mother - a teacher Maria Afanasyeva Pribylskaya. The Pribylsky family originates from the Poles banished to Siberia. The progenitor Andrei Pribylsky was a participant in the armed struggle for the freedom and independence of Poland. In 1772, he was exiled to the Urals.
Since 1932, Yuri Pribylsky lived with his parents in Yamal and studied at the Salekhard school. In 1944, he was ordered to active duty in the Red Army and sent to Novosibirsk as a cadet of the school of radio specialists. From 1944 to 1950, he served in various units of the Soviet army. After long army service, he returned to Tobolsk. He taught at a professional college of inland navigation, served as director of the professional college of the forest industry. In 1955, he graduated with honours from the Faculty of History of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1966, he completed a PhD course of the Omsk Pedagogical Institute. Since 1961, Yuri Pribylsky had been engaged in scientific and pedagogical activities at the Dmitri Mendeleev Tobolsk State Pedagogical Institute. He began as an assistant and became a professor and head of the postgraduate course of Russian history. Yuri Pribylsky devoted four dozen years to the training and scholarship of future teachers. Many students, following his example, became excellent teachers, leaders, scientists. Yuri Pribylsky was an initiator of the creation of the People's Museum of the History of Irtysh Navigation, a Museum of Military and Labour Glory of the Tobolsk River Port.
The researcher is the author, co-author and editor of over 500 publications on the history of Siberia and the North. Yuri Pribylsky is the founder of the historiography of the Russian North during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. His works such as Siberian, For Life on Earth, Tyumen Contribution to the Front, According to Duty and Сonscience became manuals for the younger generations. Yuri Pribylsky was both the researcher and the creator of regional history. The book Tobolsk, written together with D. I. Kopylov, had three issues of mass circulation. Yuri Pribylsky is an author of many articles to the Great Tyumen Encyclopedia. At the end of life, Yuri Pribylsky was a head of the postgraduate course in Russian history and a director of the Museum of Public Education of Tyumen Region. He was responsible for the preparation and release of more than forty publications on the history of public education in Tyumen Region. He also contributed much to the training of teachers for Tyumen schools.
People highly appreciated the social and scientific activities of Yuri Pribylsky. He received the Order of the Badge of Honour, the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland'', II class and the first A. A. Dunin-Gorkavich Prize for his significant contribution to science, pedagogy and service to the Fatherland. Grateful fellow citizens and the city administration awarded Professor Yuri Pribylsky the title of honorary citizen of Tobolsk. Yuri Pribylsky died in 2010.
