Topical issues of interaction between the media and the cultural community were discussed at the Presidential Library

19 April 2018

Today, April 19, 2018, the Presidential Library launched the forum "Society. Culture. Media: Problems and Prospects of Interaction". It united representatives of government bodies, students, teachers and rectors of universities, training specialists in the field of culture and the media, journalists, cultural and art workers, representatives of public and youth organizations.

The initiator and organizer of the event was the Public Chamber of St. Petersburg with the support of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation. According to the members of the Chamber, today a number of problems have been arisen in the field of interaction between journalists and the cultural community. Thus, cultural institutions are increasingly faced with the problem of insufficient coverage in the press of their events, and as a consequence, due to the minimal awareness of citizens, attendance declines. Meanwhile, it is the cultural environment that forms the personality, plays an important educational and disciplinary role.

"The great influence that the media now enjoys must be used for the good of society", - said St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko, opening the forum. "Our common goal is to raise the level of awareness about cultural events, to integrate the widest possible circle of our fellow citizens into intellectual values and wealth. We should make it so that people visit theaters, exhibitions, museums more often, so that in our megacities there were more public spaces".

Plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the North-West Federal District Alexander Beglov in his welcoming speech also stressed the need to develop dialogue and strengthen respectful relations between the media and cultural workers: "The influence of the media on a person is enormous. We learn from them about events, phenomena, about the life of our country and the whole world and we form on the basis of the received information our attitude to them and, in general, our further actions and the model of behavior. All this fully applies to such a delicate and important matter as culture. After all, without culture there will be no civilization, there will be no humanity either".

The chairman of the Public Chamber of St. Petersburg, Nina Kukuruzova, noted that Russia had a huge cultural heritage, which has been carefully studied by other countries, but which we so rarely remember and use ourselves. According to her, this platform, which united journalists and representatives of the cultural community, is called upon to outline ways of constructive interaction, the results of which will benefit the public.

Within the framework of the forum, a wide range of problems was considered: the media as part of culture, professional requirements for a journalist covering events from cultural sector, the quality of the announcement and review of cultural events in the media, the place and role of social networks in the space of contemporary culture, and many others.

The result of the event will be a general resolution, which will reflect recommendations for addressing pressing issues of interaction between the cultural community and the media, and outlines the main ways to develop constructive cooperation.
