17 May 2018

From May 17 to 20, 2018, the XIII St. Petersburg International Book Salon will be held. Timescales of the event are traditionally timed to the celebration of the founding of St. Petersburg. The Presidential Library will participate in the largest book event for the eighth time. This year it will present a new version of the portal of the Presidential Library, thanks to which the users of the resource received ample opportunities to work with rare books, documents, newsreels of the beginning of the last century and modern films made by library specialists. Today, the Presidential Library electronic fund exceeds 600 thousand units of storage, more than 150 thousand are freely available on the portal.

As part of the work of the library stand, the Presidential Library specialists will tell about the work of electronic reading rooms. They are open in all 85 regions of the Russian Federation on the basis of central libraries in regions, state bodies, museums, archives, educational institutions. 37 external access centers are located abroad on the basis of Russian centers of science and culture and other organizations in 29 countries.

At the Book Salon, anyone can get familiar with the digital collections of the Presidential Library, which are enriched year after year. Thus, the collections "State Power", "National Periodicals", "Election System in Russia: the Past and the Present", "Open Space", "The Arctic Exploration", "1917", sections "Alexander II" and "Nicholas II", collections "The House of Romanov", collections that tell about the Vladimir, Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Murmansk regions and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

This year the Presidential Library has also created a new collection "1918", dedicated to the main events of this period: from the convocation and dispersal of the Constituent Assembly to the seizure of power by A. V. Kolchak in Omsk, the annulment of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk after the beginning of the revolution in Germany and the signing of Compiegne armistice, which ended the fighting of the First World War. The material is presented in thematic sections arranged in chronological order. At the heart of their construction lies the principle "from general to particular", which allows us to consider step by step and in detail the problems of the represented events. The collection is constantly updated with new materials.

In addition, as part of the events timed to the Year of Volunteering, announced in 2018 in Russia, the Presidential Library started to form the collection of the Year of Volunteer in Russia.

The FIFA World Cup is another topic for the formation of a large-scale collection "Sport in Russia", the work on which is held by the Presidential Library. The collection will include a separate section "Football".

The Presidential Library actively participates in the formation of an electronic knowledge space in order to support Russian education and culture. Visitors of the Book Salon will learn about the educational projects of the Presidential Library, including multimedia lessons, the series of video lectures "Knowledge of Russia", and others. Traditionally, the academic year in the Presidential Library opens the Knowledge Forum. This year the event will be held for the 9th time. Schoolchildren, first-year students, cadets of military educational institutions will participate in scientific, practical and educational activities. Among the pupils of final classes of schools, lyceums and gymnasiums from September to March, the Presidential Library conducts an interactive Olympiad of schoolchildren in history, social studies and the Russian language "Russia in the Electronic World". The Olympiad consists of three stages, two of which are held remotely, thanks to which students from different parts of Russia and foreign countries can take part in the project.

The Presidential Library will familiarize visitors of the Book Salon with its own catalog of films "Open film studio "Lendok". And it's not accidental: the Presidential Library's cinema clubs have been a platform for exchange of opinions of experts and cinema fans for several years already. The monthly meetings are attended by representatives of the State Film Fund of Russia, the St. Petersburg Documentary Film Studio “Lendok”, the Russian Institute of Art History, the Non-Gaming Cinema Guild, children's multimedia studios and many other organizations.
