The Presidential Library will do the third film about Russian sailors in America
Studies on the role and significance of the Russian fleet in the formation of the USA statehood will be continued by the Presidential Library. This was stated at a meeting of the Russian Historical Society.
Saint-Petersburg, standing on the threshold of the 315th anniversary of its birth, is rightly considered the sea capital of Russia. Here, under Peter the Great, the navy of the State was born. Chairman of the Russian Historical Society Sergei Naryshkin noted that "our country has played a significant role in the development of the modern statehood of the United States of America".
During the war of the North and the South (1861-1865), the ships of the Russian military squadron cruised along the coasts of the United States - from San Francisco and New York, thereby protecting the northerners from the intervention of the French invaders. The American society of that time greeted with gratitude the help of Russian sailors. Here's how Mark Twain wrote about it: "The gratitude of Russia and its sovereign lives and will live in the hearts of Americans. Only the insane can suggest that America will ever break the fidelity of this friendship".
The support that Alexander II rendered to the North was the basis for the scenario of the documentary film "The Russian Fleet off the coast of America", filmed by the film group of the Presidential Library. The first two parts of the film, created in 2013 and 2016 and dedicated to the participation of the Russian fleet in the events of the Civil War in the northern and southern states, were presented by Director General of the Presidential Library Alexander Vershinin at a meeting in the Russian Historical Society.
After demonstrating fragments of films based on documents from the Electronic collections of the Presidential Library, he proposed to continue the study of this topic by joint efforts with RIO and release the third part of the film - about the fate of Russian sailors who took part in events off the coast of America. To realize this idea it is possible within the framework of the Contest of research works on the history of Russian participation in the formation of the statehood of the North American states. The idea of the contest was put forward by RIO Chairman Sergei Naryshkin and was adopted at the meeting of the Russian Historical Society in St. Petersburg.
Alexander Vershinin emphasized that the filming of own video films, the production of audiovisual products are one of the important activities of the Presidential Library, which next year will be 10 years old.
