A lesson for the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland "On courage, on valor, on glory ..." was held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

7 December 2018

On December 5, 2018, a thematic lesson on the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland was held for pupils of the Eastern Gymnasium of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which is celebrated on December 9, at the Sakhalin Regional Universal Research Library, which is based on Presidential Library’s regional center.

Schoolchildren learned the history of the holiday, the legend of the holy warrior Saint George, who is considered the protector of our country, about establishing the title of Hero of the Russian Federation - the highest in the hierarchy of Russian state awards.

The guests of honor of the event were veterans-border guards from the Damantsy public organization who told the children about the armed conflict on the border between the USSR and the PRC: in March 1969, after numerous provocative acts, Chinese military units invaded Soviet territory - Damansky Island on the Ussuri River - and attempted his armed seizure. The battle for Damansky Island was the first since World War II, a serious confrontation between the Armed Forces of the USSR and regular units of another major power.

The Soviet Union won, losing 58 soldiers killed, 94 were seriously injured. From the side of the People's Republic of China about 3 thousand people died. For their heroism, four Soviet soldiers received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

On the website of the Presidential Library, the region is represented by the collection “Sakhalin Region: Pages of History”. The development of the territory of Sakhalin Region, the only Russian region completely located on the islands, is represented by travel sketches, geographical and historical descriptions of the middle of the XIX - early XX century, as well as fragments of the 1929 newsreel.
