Memorial events marking the anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad held in London
A memorable evening was held at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in London, dedicated to the 76th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army in the Battle of Stalingrad. It was arranged by an initiative group of Volgograd residents living in the UK, led by Olga Igumnova. In the course of the meeting, the guests recalled the history of the battle on the Volga shores, reread the memoirs of the participants and eyewitnesses to the events, talked about the significance of the victory in Stalingrad for the outcome of the Second World War.
Part of the speech of Olga Igumnova was devoted to the friendship of the inhabitants of the cities of Soviet Stalingrad and British Coventry, which originated in the war years and continues to this day. The guests of the evening learned the history of assigning the title “Honorary Citizen of Volgograd” to the Queen Mother, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the award of the Sword of Stalingrad, forged by special decree of the British King George VI as a sign of admiration of the British people for the courage of Soviet defenders. Within the framework of the evening a plan of events for the year, also devoted to the twinning movement, was presented. It is expected that one of the milestones will be the conference, which is scheduled to be held in the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo on April 26, 2019.
The Presidential Library’s portal features “Memory of the Great Victory” collection, which includes a large number of electronic materials on the Battle of Stalingrad: video chronicles, memories of participants in the events, the Stalingradskaya Pravda issue for 1942-1943. Here are presented rare books, wartime posters, photographs of the memorial on Mamayev Kurgan and much more.
