An exhibition of Russian icons opened at the Russian Center of Science and Culture of Budapest

15 January 2020

An exhibition of icons was inaugurated at the Russian Center of Science and Culture of Budapest as part of the celebration of Orthodox Christmas.

The exposition features more than 30 works by contemporary masters on ancient Byzantine and Old Russian icon painting techniques of the 13th – 15th centuries. The icons are made of traditional materials using the melting technique, where the paint layer acquires a precious type of enameling, and oil gilding using crystalline fillings with colored natural stones.

The great interest in the exposition on the part of the Hungarian public and Russian compatriots living in Hungary clearly demonstrates that the art of icon painting today remains one of the most popular genres of modern art culture and a means of understanding the spiritual depths of Orthodox traditions.

A remote electronic reading room of the Presidential Library has been opened in Budapest since 2013. Visitors to the exhibition can always learn about the collection “Orthodox Russia. Monasteries and Icons”, which contains materials from the period of XIX - early XX centuries, spotlighting the history of especially revered icons and individual Orthodox monasteries that are located on the territory of Russia. In addition, the Presidential Library’s portal provides a virtual tour of the exhibition “Preserve the Orthodox Faith: the history of church museums. Marking the 1030th anniversary of the Christianization of Rus’".
