The Presidential Library hosted exhibition and meeting with the artist Viktor Matorin

On November 10, 2022 the Presidential Library hosted the grand opening of the exhibition “Viktor Matorin. Images of Russian History in Painting. XXI century".

Viktor Matorin, a prominent representative of modern realistic art in Russia, devoted his work to understanding the historical past: in his paintings, visitors will see important military and political events in Russia and their heroes, learn how history can be studied with the help of artistic images.

Opening the event, Director General of the Presidential Library Yuri Nosov noted: “The main topic of the Presidential Library is also the history of Russian statehood. Our electronic collections contain a large number of archive documents, publications, visual materials, many of which are available on the Presidential Library’s portal”.

The artist himself addressed the event participants with a welcoming speech. Viktor Matorin donated his work "The Lost Island" to the Presidential Library.

The guests were also greeted by the Director of the M. Gorky Scientific Library of St. Petersburg University Marina Karpova, Director of the State Museum-Reserve "Kulikovo Field" Vladimir Gritsenko and Director of the St. Petersburg State Museum-Institute of the Roerichs Alexei Bondarenko.

The exhibition “Viktor Matorin. Images of Russian History in Painting. XXI century" in the first hall presents digital images of the artist’s most significant historical paintings: “Holy Righteous Grand Prince of Moscow Dmitry Donskoy”, “Khan Mamai”, “Strike of the Ambush Regiment”, “Battle on the Ice”, “Execution of Pugachev. (Forgive me, Orthodox people!)” and others. The second presents genuine works of the painter dedicated to historical monuments in Izmailovo, the royal residence of the 17th century.

After the solemn opening of the exhibition, a meeting with the artist, at which he spoke about his work, the current state of the genre of historical painting and the development of realism in Russia, was held. A recording of the event is available on the institution's Rutube-channel.

Reference: Viktor Matorin is a recognized master of historical and landscape painting. The artist gives classes at the Ilya Glazunov Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Heworks at the Moscow State Integrated Museum-Reserve, and is the curator of the traveling exhibition project "Attraction of Realism". A large cycle of Matorin's works is exhibited at the Kulikovo Field State Museum-Reserve, the Moscow State Integrated Museum-Reserve and private collections.

Thanks to the Presidential Library’s portal, the works of Viktor Matorin will become available to connoisseurs of painting around the world: the digitized series of watercolors “Ivushki” (2022) has been transferred to the institution’s electronic collections.
