Russian and Indian writers met at International Book Fair in India

With the support of the Russian House in New Delhi, a meeting between Russian and Indian writers was held at the International Book Fair hosted by the Indian Academy of Literature. Participants discussed the challenges associated with translating literature from one language to another. The event was attended by Madhav Kaushik, President of the Academy of Literature; Srinivasa Rao, Secretary of the Academy; Elena Remizova, Head of the Russian House in New Delhi; and Yulia Aryaeva, Cultural Adviser at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in India.

Members of the Russian delegation, including writer, journalist, and editor-in-chief of the Yunost magazine, Sergey Shargunov; Director of the V. I. Dahl State Museum of the History of Russian Literature, Dmitry Bak; and writers Anna Shipilova and Vasily Natsentov, shared their views on modern translation.

In turn, prominent Indian Russian translators, Hem Chandra Pande, Pankaj Malvia, Ranjana Saxena, Ranjana Bannerji, and Kiran Singh Verma spoke about their experience translating from Russian into different Indian languages, as well as the history of publishing books by Soviet and Russian authors in India.

Following the meeting, participants agreed to address the issue of publishing works by contemporary Indian authors in Russian magazines and to encourage Indian translators to work with texts by contemporary Russian writers and poets.

The Presidential Library's electronic reading room, opened in 2023 at the Russian House in Mumbai, allows guests to explore the diverse collections of the library's digital library.
