On October 12, 2017, the Presidential Library hosted a presentation of next in turn October issue of the monthly historical and popular science magazine “Rodina” (lt. native land). Magazine’s authors, staff employees and guests of the libraries in Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Chelyabinsk, Samara, Perm, Simferopol, as well as the branches of the newspaper “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” in Nizhny Novgorod and Bishkek took part in the videoconference.

The reviewer of the edition Semen Ekshtut, PhD, presented October issue of the “Rodina” magazine. In the focus of this issue is the Caribbean crisis of 1962. Apart from a very denouement of dramatic events close to the possible Third World War, the material also tells about people who managed to prevent the catastrophic consequences of the conflict between the USSR and the USA, and also cites from the accounts of eyewitnesses.

Among other themes of October: the destinies of the first Russian aviators, the 60th anniversary of launching the first artificial Earth satellite, marine fun of Peter the Great, the red trousers as a military award of the Civil War, the restoration of the Sukharev Tower in Moscow and much more. Special article is devoted to a conversation with Boris Osyatinsky, a man who finds in forests and marshes, restores and raises combat airplanes from the Great Patriotic War. The traditional rubric “Authentic native cuisine” in the new issue tells the story of the theater buffet. The reader will find out, who “le buffetier” — concessioners or theater bartender — was, what role the theater buffet played in the XIX and the XX centuries, seeing it through the eyes of well-known writers, and in addition there is also a small selection of recipes of popular theater snacks.

Presentations of the fresh issues of the historical and popular science magazine Rodina in the Presidential Library have become traditional. They have been held monthly since April 2017 as part of a cooperation agreement between the Presidential Library and the “Russkaya Gazeta” newspaper, which was signed at the end of 2016. Two institutions regularly hold joint events. For instance, in December 2016 in a building on 3 Senate Square was opened a multimedia exhibition “2016 Year of the Rodina magazine: historical events in people stories,” and the presentation of its updated version is planned this year. In addition, Rodina magazine is a co-organizer of the Presidential Library in organization of the “The Epoch of Great reforms: history and documentary heritage (on the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Alexander II)” All-Russian Scientific Conference, which will be held in the spring of 2018. Digitized copies of this popular science publication will also gradually add to the electronic fund of the Presidential Library.
