Ch 10: Assumption of the Virgin Mary of the Mid-16th from the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Kozhevniki: [photo album] - Electronic graphic data (12 files: 93.1 MB) - Veliky Novgorod, May 23, 2012 - Access mode: Internet portal Of the Presidential Library named after BN Yeltsin The title of the accompanying document Date: 23052012 The tenth part of the album includes: the cover-saver, 11 photos of the icon "The Assumption of Our Lady". The photographs depict the general appearance and fragments of the icon. The iconographic plot presented in the album illus- trates the death and Ascension of the Virgin, the Mother of God, when she heard of her approaching demise from the Archangel Gabriel, invited the disciples of Christ to their home, wishing to see them before their death. The icon depicts the Virgin, lying on a funerary bed surrounded by apostles, above it is depicted Christ descending from heaven, receiving the hands of the soul of Mary, depicted in the form of a swaddled baby. The peculiarity of the composition is the depiction of the scene with the unbelieving Athanias in the foreground. According to the plot, the Jew Afonius, who doubted the holiness of the Mother of God, attempted to overthrow the body of Mary in the funerary bed, for which the archangel Michael sword cut off Afonius's hands - "Russian icon in the collection of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve" (director Dyakonova TI, Presidential Library of BN Yeltsin, 2012)
