Visited the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg (1894-1898), the school-studio of the artist Ya. F. Tsionglinsky (1903-1905). The organizer of the artistic society "Union of Youth" (1910-1914) and a group of avant-garde artists "Zorved" (1919-1932). In the years 1918-1926. - Teacher of the Petrograd State Free Arts and Training Workshops (later - Higher Artistic and Technical Institute), Head of the VHUTEIN Space Realism Workshop, Head of the Laboratory in the Museum of Pictorial Culture, Head of the Department of Organic Culture of the State Institute of Art Culture. The author of the music for the futuristic opera "Victory over the Sun" (1913), author of the manifesto "Towards the direction of new divisions of tone" (1923), author of the book "The Law of the Variability of Color Combinations: A Guide to Color" (Moscow, Leningrad, 1932). The works of M. Matyushin were presented at the exhibitions: "Exhibition of paintings of Petrograd artists of all directions for the 5-year period of activity 1918-1923" (May 1923), the group "Zorved" (Leningrad, 1930), etc.
