A monument to the soldiers of the ski battalions, students and teachers of the Leningrad Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture, who fought on the fronts and behind the enemy lines during the years of the Finnish and Great Patriotic War, is located on the territory of the National State University of Physical Culture, Sports and health named after PF Lesgaft. Opened in 1974. The authors of the project: the sculptor M. P. Scheglov and the architect SA Ushakov. The monument is a sculptural composition made of copper: in a swift roll the submachine-gunners descend from the mountain, a wounded soldier is supported on the run by his comrade. On both sides of the monument are low concrete steles with the dates "1939-1940" and "1941-1945". Institute of Physical Culture. PF Lesgafta is the only civilian higher educational institution of the USSR awarded with the military order: on April 16, 1942, the school was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In the battles, the forest-goats took an active part in the composition of individual ski battalions formed from teachers and students of the university, and 13 partisan detachments with a total strength of 268 men were created to act behind enemy lines.
