Formation of the square began in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, when it was called the Horse. In 1811, the first city theater was erected on the square, and it was called the Theater Theater. After the demolition of the theater building in its place was built hotel "European", which gave the new name of the area - European. Tsarskoy it began to be called since 1869 after the construction of the chapel in memory of the salvation of Alexander II in the assassination attempt in 1866. In 1871-1872, on the square the first fountain of the Kyiv Water Supply Society was built according to the project of the architect A. Schiele, later a flowerbed was arranged around it. The fountain was dismantled in 1911, when a monument to Alexander II was erected next to the building of the Merchant Assembly. The building of the Merchants' Assembly was built at the beginning of the Alexander descent in 1882 on the project of architect V. Nikolayev (now here is the National Philharmonic of Ukraine). Since 1892, the first in the Russian Empire electric tram began to move from Podol to Tsar's Square. The name "European" was returned to the square.
