December 19, 1926 with the participation of members of the Soviet government was inaugurated Volkhov hydroelectric plant n. a. V. I. Lenin - the oldest operating hydroelectric plant of Russia.

On January 18, 1943, troops from the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts liberated the city of Shlisselburg and the southern coast of Lake Ladoga. This broke the deadly ring that had encircled the city since September 1941.

January 16 the forces of the 54th Army, commanded by Lt. Gen. Roginsky, began the offensive at Luban sector. January 20 the troops of the 59th Army completed the encirclement of the enemy Novgorod group’s units, which had not managed to retreat, and in cooperation with the 7th Infantry Corps, which had been put into field from the front reserve, destroyed them and freed Novgorod after 883 days of its occupation.

On September 8, 1941, a Siege ring was set around Leningrad. The Siege lasted until January 18, 1943, when the troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts met near the southern shore of Lake Ladoga. A year later, on January 27, 1944, the Siege was finally lifted.

76 years ago - on January 29, 1944, the troops of the 54th Army of the Volkhov Front during the Novgorod-Luga offensive operation liberated Chudovo from Nazi invaders. An exhibition of documents and photographs, arranged by the specialists of the Chudovo Local History Museum in the foyer of the “Svetoch” regional recreation center is marking this memorable date. The exhibition features documentary evidence of the feats of Soviet soldiers.

Reminiscences about a defender of Leningrad to enter the Presidential Library’s collections

The Presidential Library has been receiving materials as part of a large-scale campaign launched last November in an effort to collect first-hand accounts of the siege. This time we got a letter from Kasym Maulenov, son of the prominent Kazakh poet Syrbai Maulenov, who defended Leningrad on the Volkhov Front, was seriously wounded and kept the memories of that time alive through his whole life.
