Memory of Russia: Canvas of Peter von Hess “Crossing the Berezina” is presented in the Hermitage

As part of the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812 the State Hermitage continues to present battle piece paintings, made by P. von Hesse by Nicholas II in honor of the most important events of the Patriotic war of 1812. The Winter Palace in the Military Gallery is exhibited the canvas “Crossing the Berezina”.

16 (28) November 1812, at the Berezina River (a tributary of the Dnieper) took place a battle between the Russian army and the retreating army of Napoleon.
16 (28) ноября 1812 г. на реке Березина (правый приток Днепра) произошло сражение между русской... были занять оборонительную позицию на линии рек Улла и Березина фронтом на восток и отрезать Наполеону..., 14 (26) ноября подошла к Березине. Общая численность французских войск вместе с отставшими и больными..., приказал немедленно навести переправу через Березину у Студенки. Работы начались 14 (26) ноября под началом... на Березине разыгралось сражение: войска 3-й западной армии адмирала Чичагова атаковали на правом берегу...16 (28) ноября 1812 г. на реке Березина (правый приток Днепра) произошло сражение между русской армией и отступающей армией Наполеона.
...Состоялось сражение на Березине — последнее крупное сражение во время Отечественной войны 1812 г.

In the framework of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812, the Hermitage continues to present the battle paintings by P. von Hess in request of Nicholas I in honor of the most important events of the Patriotic War of 1812. From August 17, 2012 the painting “The Battle of Smolensk” is presented at the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace.

On June 13 (25), 1812 Alexander I gave order to the troops to begin hostilities due to Napoleon invasion. The same day tsar gave rescript at the name of the State Council and Committee of Ministers President N. I. Saltykov ‘On the necessity to be up in arms so as to repulse the French armies from the Russian limits’.

On October 11, 2017, at 7 pm MSK the Presidential Library will feature an exhibition of the first color photographs of the Russian Empire entitled “Vast expanses of Russia in color photography by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky” at the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. The exhibition will be held in the course of the 69th Frankfurt Book Fair and will last until October 15, 2017.
