Reminiscences about a defender of Leningrad to enter the Presidential Library’s collections

The Presidential Library has been receiving materials as part of a large-scale campaign launched last November in an effort to collect first-hand accounts of the siege. This time we got a letter from Kasym Maulenov, son of the prominent Kazakh poet Syrbai Maulenov, who defended Leningrad on the Volkhov Front, was seriously wounded and kept the memories of that time alive through his whole life.

A lot has been written about the heroic deeds of medical workers during the Great Patriotic War. They carried the wounded off the battlefield under heavy fire and, forgetting about their own safety, fought for the lives of everyone for days on end. Thanks to their efforts, about 17 million Red Army soldiers who were wounded or sick during the war were returned to active duty.

In an effort to preserve the historical memory of the siege of Leningrad the Presidential Library is running a campaign in collaboration with Peterburgsky Dnevnik newspaper and Radio Rossii St. Petersburg. As part of the campaign, Marina Goloushina, St. Petersburg resident, has brought a unique book entitled My Siege, which will be digitized.

On December 21, 2018 the Pavlovsk State Museum-Reserve is staging the exhibition “Memories of Pavlovsk Seasons…”. It will be opened as part of the regular research conference “Kuchumov Readings”. In the spotlight of the exhibition is the 170th anniversary of inauguration of Pavlovsk Music Station marked in the outgoing year, which became a legend in the history of Russian musical culture of the 19th century.

The Battle of Stalingrad in the Presidential Library fund: memories, newsreels, photographs, rare editions

On February 2, 1943, the Soviet Army defeated the German fascist troops in the Battle of Stalingrad. The Presidential Library portal features the collection "Memory of the Great Victory", where a large number of electronic materials dedicated to this battle was collected: video chronicles, memoirs of participants of events, issues of the "Stalingradskaya Pravda" for 1942-1943; here are also presented rare books, wartime posters, photos of the memorial on the Malakhov kurgan and much more.
